GVMC yet get a Women Mayor

The YSR Congress Party which captured the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) bagging 58 out of 98 seats, is said to be considering fielding a woman mayor for the city which will soon become executive capital of the State.

The ruling party, fielded 48 women candidates for the March 10 elections with favourable results declared on March 14. The Mayor and the Deputy Mayor election is slated for March 18.

With the Mayor's post reserved for Backward Classes (general), it is likely to field a candidate from the majority Yadava community in the city for the top post and choose one from the Kapu community as Deputy Mayor. It is also most likely that the Deputy Mayor may also be chosen from among women corporators. Chief Minister and party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy is likely to announce the candidates in a day or two.

This will mean that the city president and aspirant for the mayoral post Vamsikrishna Srinivasa Yadav, though he belongs to the Yadava community, may still be left out. In fact, Vamsi was promised something big when he threatened to quit after he was denied the ticket to contest for the Assembly from Visakhapatnam East in 2019.

Perhaps, the YSRCP did not field him as he had failed in two earlier occasions-first through Praja Rajyam Party and later as YSRCP candidate but convinced him that his services would be rewarded later.

However, the situation is different now and maybe, the ruling party would prefer him to some nominated post in the future but this time around, the choice may be from among women.
In the past, Rajana Ramani, a former TDP MLA also from Yadava community, had served as Congress Mayor of the city.
