Nirmala Sitaraman takes charge as Defense Minister

New Delhi, Sept 7: A minister has taken charge.
Nirmala Sitharaman today took charge of the defense ministry.Former Defense Minister Arun Jaitley has handed over her the responsibility.

Jaitley has been relieved of the additional responsibility. earlier he held the defense ministry after Manohar Parrikar has resigned as the cabinet minister to become the Cheif Minister of Goa in 2016.

A priest has performed special prayers before she has assumed the office. Sitharaman was elevated to the cabinet rank on Sunday and given the defense portfolio.



After assuming the charge she has interacted with the officials and held some crucial discussions.

Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi has rewarded her by promoting as union minister after she did splendid job as minister of state in commerce department.

She will be a part of crucial Cabinet Committee on Security whose members include the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the External Affairs Minister and the Finance Minister, Defense Minister.
