SC stayed on granting living entities to Ganga,Yamuna Rivers

New Delhi, July 8: The bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar, Justice DY Chandrachud has stayed on Friday the Uttarakhand High Court's judgment to granting living entities to the Ganga and Yamuna rivers same as human beings.

Challenging an Uttarakhand High Court, the Uttarakhand Government on June 27 sought a stay on the March 20 order in the Supreme Court. The government has asked the apex court to consider the legal questions arising from the landmark verdict.

Challenging the three-month-old verdict which bestows on these rivers, their tributaries and water bodies fed by them the same legal rights as enjoyed by a person and declares the state chief secretary as their local guardian the state government contends that the order was legally untenable, reports media.

However, legal experts told media at the time that treating the rivers as "living entities" would mean that polluting the rivers would be seen as akin to harming a human being.
