First time GHMC achieved 100% segregation

Hyderabad, January 17: First time in Hyderabad, the vehicles of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) carrying completely segregated dry waste and another carrying only green waste reached the Jawaharnagar treatment site on Tuesday.

As many as 47 Swachh autos carried segregated waste from over 30,000 households in Saketh area, ensuring 100 per cent source segregation.

The 100 % source segregation exercise included accumulation of 7 tonnes of dry waste and 9.92 tonnes of wet waste.

After collecting waste in a segregated form from about 30,000 households, 47 swachh autos reached the transfer station at Saketh and Mallapur and waste was transferred separately to a larger vehicle which continued the segregated chain till it reached Jawaharnagar.

With the new Solid Waste Management rules of 2016 making source segregation of waste mandatory, GHMC achieved a partial success in this regard as the complete chain of waste management was achieved during the exercise on Tuesday.

In preparation of this, the GHMC had distributed 44 lakh dustbins and 200 Swachh autos. Households were convinced that waste needed to be segregated.GHMC provided cash rewards for colonies segregating their waste.

According to the GHMC officials, this is a unique achievement which will be emulated on a larger scale in the coming days.
