Telangana CM KCR launches Kanti Velugu Scheme

Siddipet, Aug 15: In a major initiative, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has formally launched the Kanti Velugu, a mega eye screening programme covering the entire population of the State, at Malkapur village in Medak district on August 15, coinciding with the Independence Day.

The programme envisages eye screening and vision test camps for the entire population of the State and the government would provide spectacles free of cost to beneficiaries wherever required.

Arrangements would be made for provision of medicines, surgeries and other treatment required free of cost for the needy while steps would be taken to educate people on prevention of serious eye disabling diseases.

Under "Kanti Velugu", the entire population of 3.7 crore will be provided free eye care. The authorities will not only conduct eye screening but will also provide free medicines, spectacles and arrange for free surgeries, if required.

The government expects that four lakh surgeries will be performed across the state. Under what is claimed to be the first such programme taken up anywhere in the world, the government plans to distribute 40 lakh spectacles.

For the fifth consecutive year, Mr Rao unfurled the national flag at Golconda Fort.

While the Chief Minister is slated to launch the programme in his native Medak district, public representatives will launch the programme in their respective constituencies simultaneously.

In all, 812 teams would be deployed for conducting the eye camps in all the 12,751 villages across the State.

The teams would be given a vehicle and it was expected that each of these teams would screen about 250 people in the rural areas and 300 in urban areas on a daily basis.
