Politicians mourns demise of Somnath Chatterjee

New Delhi, Aug 13: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chaterjee died at a Kolkata nursing home on Monday following a cardiac arrest and prolonged age-related ailments.

In this regard, Congress President Rahul Gandhi hailed him as "an institution", respected by all parliamentarians.

"I mourn the passing away of Somnath Chatterjee," Gandhi said after news came of the demise of the former 10-time parliamentarian.

"He was an institution. Greatly respected and admired by all parliamentarians, across party lines. My condolences to his family at this time of grief," Gandhi tweeted.

"Shocked and extremely sad to learn the passing away of Shri Somnath Chatterjee. A stalwart parliamentarian, popular amongst people and one of greatest Speakers of Lok Sabha. A huge loss to the Indian democracy. May his family and near & dear ones get the strength to cope," Odisha Chief Minister tweeted.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday condoled the demise of former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who died at the age of 89 at a Kolkata hospital.

In the condolence message issued by his office, Adityanath reminisced the value addition brought about by the late leader to the rich and illustrious traditions of Parliament.
