Karunanidhi Funeral Updates: 2 Dead, 33 Injured Outside Rajaji Hall

Chennai, Aug 08:: DMK leader M Karunanidhi, who died on Tuesday after a long illness, will be buried at Chennai's Marina Beach, where three other former chief ministers including J Jayalalithaa have memorials.

As we earlier reported that, The Madras High Court has granted permission for Karunanidhi's burial at Marina beach, a case that was heard today morning.

The DMK patriarch will be laid to rest will be at Anna Square memorial along Chennai's Marina beach. At Karunanidhi's funeral, hundreds of supporters escorted the ambulance carrying his body to his house. At Rajaji Hall, there has been a stampede and the police have lathi-charged the crowd. 2 people have reportedly died and 33 have been injured in the stampede.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier on Tuesday evening rejected the request from rival DMK, triggering sharp criticism of its decision in Tamil Nadu and beyond. The DMK said the AIADMK's refusal to give six-feet land to bury the five-time chief minister next to his mentor CN Annadurai's grave "reeks of pettiness and political vendetta". Mr Karunanidhi died on Tuesday in Chennai.

He was 94. Actor Rajinikanth and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited his house. The Tamil Nadu government has announced a seven-day mourning in his honour.
