During the preliminary investigation out of 42 inmates of the shelter home, 29 were raped for months, as it was confirmed by medical examinations. The shelter home is located in Muzaffarpur district, Bihar.

Ten accused in the case have been arrested by the police authorities. After blame game of the political parties, the Nitish Kumar government handed over the investigation of the alleged sexual assault case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The police authorities have filed a charge sheet against the ten men who were arrested.

It was the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar who had recommended a CBI inquiry into the alleged sexual exploitation of girls at a state-funded shelter home. Looking at the complexity of the case and laxity of the authorities, he termed the incident as ‘deplorable’.

The incident came to light after the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences submitted a report, based on conversations with several girls at the government-run shelter home.

The non-government organization running the shelter home was already blacklisted and all girls were shifted to homes in nearby areas. Meanwhile, when the police authorities dug up the premises as allegedly a body of a minor was buried at the shelter, but they failed to find the body.
