New Delhi, July 25: Firebrand Patidar reservation crusader Hardik Patel was sentenced to two years in jail by a Gujarat court in a 2015 riots case linked to the Patel quota movement.

From this aspect, Patel was found guilty of charges related to arson and creating a ruckus at a Bharatiya Janata Party MLA's office.

A total of 17 people were named as accused in the case. A court in Gujarat's Mehsana found three people - including Hardik Patel - guilty. Lalji Patel, the leader of the Sardar Patel Group, was also found guilty.

The three have been fined Rs. 50,000 apart from the two-year imprisonment.

About the case:

Hardik Patel was named in the complaint filed in July 2015 when a rally of the Patel community seeking reservation turned violent, resulting in damage to property and assault on some media persons.

He and 17 others are accused of being part of a group of around 500 people from the Patel community which vandalized the office of a BJP legislator in the town of Visnagar in Mehsana district, attacked journalists, and rioted on July 23. The incident took place when the Patel agitation demanding job reservation was at its peak.
