Worst: Gang-rape on foreign woman in TN

Tiruvannamalai, July 18: In a brutal incident, Five People have arrested, who are in connection with the alleged rape of a young Russian woman.

The men who were taken into custody include Neelakandan, the caretaker of the private guest house where the woman, 21, was staying.

A case was filed under IPC sections 376 (rape) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offenses punishable with imprisonment for life or another imprisonment).

The woman arrived in Tiruvannamalai, home to a well-known Shiva temple, last Thursday July 12. She came to learn meditation. On Saturday, it's believed, she fell unconscious after consuming a drugged lemon drink at a birthday party in her guest house apartment.

Later, Neelankandan, 36, and his brother Bharati, 30, took her to a private hospital. Doctors who saw bruises and marks left by nails on her body confirmed she was raped, and said she'd been unconscious for a long time due to an overdose.

An inquiry reveled that Neelakandan and Bharati, along with three others, had drugged her. It's still unclear who or how many of them raped her. Besides the brothers, their friend Manikandan, 27, Venkat, 29, and Shiv, 32, have also been taken into custody.

The police will now record the Russian national's statement with help from two translators. She has now been moved to a government hospital.

Vanita, a deputy inspector general of police, said an investigation was under way, and that more details would be revealed later.
