First Muslim to enter Lok Sabha

Lucknow, May 31: Tabassum Hasan, the wife of former BSP MP Munawwar Hasan, became the first Muslim to enter Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh since 2014 when Narendra Modi wave swept the state.

Contesting as an RLD candidate, Tabassum Hasan defeated Mriganka Singh of the BJP by nearly 50,000 votes.

Tabassum Hasan was backed by a united Opposition including the BSP, the SP, the Lok Dal and the Congress.

Hassan will now be the only Muslim representative from UP in the Lok Sabha.

No Muslim candidate had won in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from 80 parliamentary constituencies in Uttar Pradesh.

In the bypolls held earlier this year for Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha constituencies, the Samajwadi Party candidates had won. But the party had not fielded a Muslim candidate in any of the two seats.
