Kolkata, May 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has attended the convocation of Visva Bharati University at Shantiniketan on Friday, 25 May, in the presence of his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina and west Bengala chief Minister Mamta Banerjee.

Here is the interesting development has emerged that, Modi will not confer the 'Desikottam', Visva-Bharati University's highest award, during its convocation.

From this context, The announcement, however, drew a sharp reaction from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sabujkali Sen, the officiating vice-chancellor of the university, said that "For the time being, the award ceremony is being deferred due to the paucity of time. In the 60s too, the award was not conferred due to the paucity of time. It was later conferred to eminent personalities.

"I am very unhappy for one reason. Those who were supposed to get Deshikottam are not getting it. I am sorry for this, Mamata Said.

"I do not want to go into the reasons why they are not getting the award. I am shocked," she said.
