Kathua rape and murder case: Media houses to pay Rs 10 lakh

Jammu Kashmir, April 18: Media houses that revealed the identity of the eight-year-old girl in the Kathua rape and murder case have been asked to pay Rs 10 lakh each as a penalty.

In this regard, The Delhi High Court on Wednesday said the amount will be deposited into the Jammu and Kashmir victims' compensation fund, according to the media report.

The Delhi high court added that whoever discloses a rape victim’s identity can be imprisoned for 6 months. The next date of hearing in the case is April 25.

India bars the publication of the name of a person against whom a sexual offense has been committed, under Section 228A of the Indian Penal Code.

On Monday, the Supreme Court asked the Jammu and Kashmir government to provide security to the girl’s family. Her father has requested the Supreme Court to transfer the rape and murder case from the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district to Chandigarh.
