GHMC launches new initiative to curb plastic Usage in function halls

Hyderabad, Mar 21: In order to curb the use of plastic bags, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decided to impose a ban on plastic usage in function halls across Hyderabad.

Announcing the launch of the unique initiative - 'Haritha Utsavalu' (Green Festival on Monday, the GHMC plans to implement it from the second week of April.

The special focus of 'Haritha Utsavalu' would be on restricting the use of plastic cups, plates, glasses and other stuff made up of disposable plastic in various function halls in Hyderabad.

Local Deputy Commissioners are set to interact personally with the management of marriage halls to encourage and make them aware of the importance of not using plastic.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy mentioned that during the marriage season in Hyderabad every year a large amount of plastic waste was generated from function halls, hence it is important that these halls achieve a complete ban in the usage of plastic by replacing plastic cups and plates with steel plates and glass tumblers.

He said that curbing this practice was an important step adding that the GHMC has made it mandatory for function halls to establish compost pits on the premises of various function halls.

From March 10, the corporation has already begun implementing the ban on plastic bags that are below 50 microns of thickness.
