South African president Jacob Zuma announced his resignation

Johannesburg Feb 15: In a major development South African President Jacob Zuma resigned from the position today. The leader has taken this decision after African National Congress (ANC) had tied up with opposition parties in Parliament to remove him via a motion of no confidence.

president Zuma said in a nationally-televised broadcast has said that "I resign as President of the Republic (of South Africa) with immediate effect".he has served the country for 9 years and his second term would end in 2019.



Sources said that the president has resigned because the ANC wanted to replace him with Cyril Ramaphosa who was elected in his place as the new President of the ANC two months ago.

Zuma has added that "I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organization, (but) I have always been a disciplined member of the organization."I fear no motion of no confidence or impeachment. They are the lawful mechanisms for the people of this beautiful country to remove their president."

Deputy President Ramaphosa is now expected to take over as the interim President.
