Railways sanctions Rs.60 Cr for Nellore Railway station modernization

Nellore, Jan 23: Following demands right from top leaders to common public, the proposed modernization of passenger amenities have been approved by the Railway Board and Rs. 60 crore has already been sanctioned for undertaking related works to develop commercial spaces at the Nellore railway station here.

The revenues generating from this commercial exploitation of the railway properties will be used for developing and upgrading passenger amenities to world-class standards.

The Railway Land Development Authority (RLDA) and the National Building Construction Corporation (NBCC) have been assigned to jointly deal with these developmental works.

Under this, an overall commercial space of 65,000 sft would be built at the Nellore station in the next four years.

This would attract commercial businesses like hotels and malls.

The sanction of this project materialised after Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu, Nellore MP M. Rajamohan Reddy and local MLAs took up the issue at the national level in the last few months.

Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager, South Central Railway, who inspected the railway station on Monday, said that a joint technical team of experts from the RLDA and NBCC would visit the station next month to study the scope for creating locally relevant infrastructure.

"The overall concept will be finalised after the technical team submits its findings. Like in the airports, advanced passenger infrastructure will be come up at Nellore station. All this will be taken up on public private partnership model," he added.

These modernisation works would be taken up as early as possible and they will be scheduled for completion by 2022.
