Telangana to construct 1000 rainwater harvesting structures

Hyderabad, Jan 20: In order to give a major fillip to the rainwater harvesting program, the Telangana government will construct 1000 rainwater harvesting structures around the city of Hyderabad.

Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister K T Rama Rao will launch the programme on February one.

At a review meeting here on Friday, Principal Secretary, MA&UD Arvind Kumar said that the Telangana State Industrial Infrastructure Corporation Limited (TSIIC) will take up around 500 rainwater harvesting structures in the Industrial Area Local Authorities (IALAs), while the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), water Board will take up 250 each.

The Directorate of Municipal Administration has been asked to take up another 250 structures in all the seven ULBs around the city.He stressed the need to create awareness among the people to promote water conservation and to improve the groundwater for sustainable yields in the borewells and said that a uniform type design should be formulated for all the harvesting structures with a unique logo.

All the 3000 community resource persons in GHMC and Swachh sevaks should be involved to create awareness among the public, he said.Water Board Managing Director Dana Kishore suggested that the builders, NGOs and academic institutions should be involved at all stages of programme and propagate the importance of maintenance.

GHMC Commissioner Janardhan Reddy, DMA T K Sridevi and other officials attended the meeting.
