Supreme Court to hear petition on live streaming of courts proceeding

The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to hear a plea seeking live streaming of apex court's proceedings on cases of national importance. A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud said the matter will be listed for hearing soon. Senior lawyer Indira Jaising, after filing the plea, said the citizens of the country have every right to know the proceedings of the top court.

She added that many western countries have such systems in place to facilitate transparency. She cited the example of International Court of Justice which allows live streaming of its proceeding on Youtube.

"If live streaming of top court's proceedings is not possible, then alternately the video recording should be allowed," argued Jaising. She said that the Supreme Court will be hearing the petitions of national and constitutional importance like Aadhaar and the citizens must be availed the facility.
