AP Finally Gets New DGP

Amaravati, December 31: Andhra Pradesh government finally appointed a new Director General of Police, Head of Police Force (DGP, HoPF) on Saturday.

Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar has issued the order that and appointed DGP Dr. M Malakondaiah, an IPS officer of 1985 batch

Malakondaiah will be succeeding the former DGP Nanduri Sambashiva Rao, who retired from service on Sunday.

The new DGP thanked Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu for the opportunity after he took office. He also addressed the media and delivered a vote of thanks to the former DGP.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs had, last month, twice rejected a panel of names forwarded by the state for the DGP (HoPF) post.

The Centre rejected Malakondaiah's nomination twice as he had less than two years of service left and hence his appointment could be in violation of the Supreme Court's 2006 judgement in the Prakash Singh case.

However, the the state government issued an ordinance last week abolishing a 2014 State Police Act that gave a fixed two-year tenure to the DGP (HoPF) irrespective of the date of incumbent officer's superannuation.
