GHMC inaugurates Online Energy Conservation Building Code

Hyderabad, Dec 21: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched online compliance system for Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) at Institution of Engineers Auditorium here on Wednesday during Energy Conservation Week.

ECBC applies to any commercial building or complex that has plot area of 1,000 square meters or more or built-up area of 2,000 square meters or more. Buildings of a certain type such as multiplexes, hospitals and hotels must comply with ECBC irrespective of built-up area.

Officials said that awareness is being created on the implementation of ECBC by taking more energy conservation activities in the State. They also highlighted that efforts would be made to make all buildings in the State comply with ECBC.

Speaking during the launch of online ECBC system, Ismail Ali Khan, Chairman of Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission said "Energy conservation is not just confined to electricity consumption, but conservation of all segments like petroleum, coal and others".

He highlighted that energy conservation doesn't mean reducing the use of power but to upgrade the electricity with better technology like replacing street lights with LED bulbs.

The State government along with GHMC are working together to meet anticipated growth needs and goals of energy conservation to build healthy communities.

To reap energy savings, Hyderabad and Telangana are moving forward with India's first mandatory online system to ensure energy savings in buildings while reducing harmful air pollution and dangerous power outages, officials said.
