India Disappointed as WTO ends without solution on Food Subsidy

BUENOS AIRES Argentina: Dec 14: In a Major Disappointment for India the World Trade Organisations (WTO) 11th ministerial conference in Argentina has ended with no declaration announced at the end of the discussions.Sources said that the four-day conference made only some progress in issues such as fisheries and e-commerce by agreeing to work programmes.

The 164 member WTO failed to reach a common solution for resolving food securiy issue a demand raised by many of the developing countries. earlier the hectic parleys, intense lobbying, and prolonged posturing took place to find a solution over public food stockholding but a solution was not reached.

India had strongly put forth its demand and argued that "a permanent solution for the problem of issuing food grains at subsidies so that poverty can be eliminated and farmers lives can be enhanced ."

However, US has refused to accept Indias demands and said that "permanent solution to the food stockholding issue was not acceptable to America. "

Currently, WTO caps the amount to be spent on food subsidy and the COnference had agreed to extend a find a solution in 11 meeting in the 9th meeting held in Bali in 2013.
