India to Join Wassenaar Arrangement (WA)

Austria Dec 8: India is all set to join Wassenaar Arrangement (WA) a multilateral export control regime.This would be second such regime where India would become a member earlier India has become a member of Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR) last year.

The WA members plenary session had been concluded in Vienna, Austria on Thursday and the regime has announced that"WA Participating States reviewed the progress of a number of current membership applications and agreed at the Plenary meeting to admit India which will become the Arrangement's 42nd Participating State as soon as the necessary procedural arrangements for joining the WA are completed."

Currently, the members in WA works towards ensuring transparency in defense deals, comprising transfer of arms and dual-use goods and technologies. The group also promotes transparency so that the ammunition going to the destination country do not disturb the security balance in the region of the recipient nation.

Currently, China is not a member of this group and Countries such as USA, France,Germany have supported the India's entry into the group.
