Hyderabads Charminar to emerge as Swachh Iconic Site

Hyderabad, Nov 22: Charminar, The global icon of Hyderabad is all set to be developed as a Swachh Iconic Site (SIS).

While Speaking to media, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that the Charminar will get a makeover.

The surroundings around the monument will get a cleaner environment by the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) and the GHMC. The NTPC will also provide the financial and technical support.

The civic body in a statement said that about 75 steel garbage bins will be set up around the historic monument. Bollards, which are short posts used to prevent vehicular traffic, will be set up all along the main routes leading to Charminar, for the benefit of pedestrians.

The four arches around Charminar, collectively called Char Kaman, will be decorated with lights. Sanitation infrastructure will also be made available for 24×7 use, modern, uniform kiosks will be set up for hawkers.

The surroundings of the monument will be dotted with drinking water, ATMs, and underground garbage bins will be installed on a pilot basis, the statement said.

The Qutb Shahi monument which attracts thousands of visitors every day will be provided with better lighting.

While the funds in this regard are yet to be allocated, an action plan will be made shortly.

The decision on Charminar being one of the Swachh Iconic Sites to be developed was announced in April and it will put into action after the meet at the national consultation on Swachh Bharat Mission in Delhi.
