Nitin Gadkari: Urine Banks to be set up to produce urea

New Delhi Nov 15: In a move to reduce the imports of fertilizers in the country. The Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has urged industries to develop urea from human urea.

The Minister has said that we are working with Swedish scientists to implement this idea and has urged to setup urine banks in every taluka of the country.

Gadkari added that "Human urine contains a lot of nitrogen. But this is wasted. Since onverting waste into wealth is my passion, I feel there is no harm in trying the idea. We already have organic substitutes for phosphorous and potassium. If we could add nitrogen, it could make an ideal plant booster".

"Farmers will be expected to collect the urine in 10-liter plastic cans and bring it to taluka centers. "The cans will have to be provided by the government and the farmer would get Rs 1 per litre," he added.

Minister has also said that "The trial can be done in rural areas because here the urine is not diluted with water in the toilet. The urine will then be distilled to make it pure so that it can act as a soluble organic fertilizer and currently, trial runs are being carried out in Dhapewada village my home village — near Nagpur."
