Pillion riding banned for 2-wheelers in Karnataka

Bangalore, October 24: Here is the bad news for the Motorist lovers, as the Karnataka government has banned riding pillion on two-wheelers with engine capacity of less than 100 CC.

A recent report published revealed that nearly 25 percent of the people riding two-wheelers up to 100 cc are women. The Section 143 (3) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989 states that 'No pillion seat shall be attached to a motorcycle with less than 100 cc engine

Government has said that "this ban is being brought in the interests of the safety of pillion riders who are often victims of road accidents."

The ban will not affect existing two-wheelers but will apply to new vechiles which are sold. The manufacturer will not be allowed to put a pillion on the vehicle and the buyer too cannot make after-market alterations to these vehicles.

Transport commissioner B Dayananda said to media that, "We have to follow the recent high court order based on Karnataka Motor Vehicles Rules which do not allow pillion riding on two-wheelers less than 100cc."
