Make in India: First Scorpene-class submarines handed to Navy

The Make in India programme’s first Scorpene-class submarines out of the six was handed over to Navy on Thursday.The submarines are designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS and are being built in Mumbai by Mazagon Dock Limited as part of Project-75 of the Indian Navy.

The Submarine named as Kalvari marks major milestone in Indian Navy submarine programme. A senior MDL official said. “History was written at MDL (Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd) with the delivery of the first Scorpene submarine, Kalvari, to the Indian Navy today. Kalvari is named after the dreaded Tiger Shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean. The delivery of submarine also affirms the MDL’s strides in ‘Make In India’ programme.
