31st death anniversary of brave Indian girl Neerja

Neerja Bhanot, the flight attendant who saved 349 lives in a hijack attack and sacrificed her own life for people is remembered on her 31st death anniversary.

She boarded a Pan Am Flight 73, which was scheduled to fly to US. Neerja sensed the possible hijack and alerted the flight captain. It was neerja who helped all people to escape, but died saving others.

"According to Mrs Malti Krishnaswamy and other eyewitnesses, Neerja was caught by the leader of the terrorists and shot point blank. In the dead body I saw bullets had hit her in the abdomen, on the shoulder near the neck and in the arm," her father wrote.

"When she opened the emergency exit, she could have herself been the first to slide down the chute. But she was the 'captain', who believed that she had to be the last person to quit - alive or dead."

After the Hijack everyone survived except Neerja. Bollywood also paid tribute to her by making a movie ‘Neerja’, which tells her life story.
