CBDT : No inconsistency in number of tax payers

New Delhi Aug 19: A data was released yesterday.The tax department on Friday revealed that

* The number of individuals filing income tax returns has jumped to 2.79 crores.

* In 2016 2.23 crore people have filed IT returns.

* In 2015 2 crore people have filed tax returns.

* 56 Lakh Individuals have additionally filed income tax returns in this year.

Earlier Prime Minister during his independence day speech has said that nearly 56 Lakh people have additionally filed the returns.

Earlier in a reply to a question in Rajyasabha the government has said that 33 lakh new people have filed their returns and there was still time and the final figures came after Aug 5 which was the last date for filing tax returns.

Finally, the CBDT has said that "there is no inconsistency in the data provided by the government in the (different) statements... as these are in different contexts and for different time periods".
