HC asks brief report over Nerella incident

Hyderabad, Aug 17: The Common Division bench of Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday wanted a brief report regarding the injuries to villagers of Nerella near Siricilla after they were tackled by police.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Uma Devi are dealing with public interest petition filed by Civil Liberties Committee president Gaddam Lakshman who was seeking a CBI probe into the issue and stringent punishment to the police officers who tortured the Dalit youth.

When a lorry carrying illegal sand killed a person there was the protest. A lorry was burnt. Then the police picked up eight youths from three villages and brutally tortured them at the behest of sand mafia, Raghunath, counsel for the petitioner said.

The bench earlier deputed two doctors from Warangal MGM hospital to study the condition of the six youths who were still getting treatment from a private hospital in Vemulavada in Karimnagar district.



The government told the court that when there was violence, the police intervened and then both received injuries.

J. Ramachandra Rao, additional advocate general for Telangana said that the injured are addressing press conferences from the hospital.

The additional Advocate general said that no one takes note when a policeman is beaten. It sought to know what the injuries were and when the villagers were handed over to the Jail Superintendent.

The bench said that it wants to see the details on how all the injured received similar injuries on the same parts of the body. The police have to explain this and the case is listed to August 30.
