Opposition urges Governor to take action

Hyderabad, Aug 15: The Telangana opposition parties have urged Governor ESL Narasimhan to instruct the DGP to register cases under the SC/ST Act against the Rajanna Sircilla district SP Vishwajit Kampati and other police officials who "tortured" Dalits and BCs at Nerella for opposing the sand mining operations.

The Leaders of the opposition parties including the Congress, the BJP, the Telugu Desam Party and the CPI along with the TJAC chairman M. Kodandaram called on the Governor on Monday morning and submitted a memorandum to him in this regard.

The Opposition parties alleged, in their memorandum, that Dalits and BCs of Nerella village were subjected to "worst form of police brutality and third-degree torture" by the Sircilla police.

The government had unleashed a reign of terror at the behest of the sand contractors who were related to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao's family, they alleged. Narrating the sequence of the event that led to the police action, the opposition leaders said villagers set on fire three trucks carrying sand after a labourer, B. Bhumaiah, was crushed to death by a speeding lorry.
