Telangana stands 4th in human trafficking

Hyderabad, July 16: In a shocking news, India ranks fourth in modern slavery, ranks fifth among 84 countries in human trafficking. The Telangana state stands fourth in human trafficking cases across the country.

These were some of the shocking statistics revealed at an awareness workshop on trafficking and child marriages held in the city by Girls Advocacy Alliance.

"Media has a key role to play in raising awareness about crimes against women. Many of these statistics are rarely revealed unless there is a big story," said Amoga Laxmi, an activist, showing the data to buttress the fact that India has a long way to go before child marriages and trafficking for sex can be controlled.

"There are designated officers called Child Marriage Prohibition Officers, but many a time, their phones are switched off or are unreachable. The only recourse to us at such times is media," said an official speaking about the difficulty in raising awareness about issues relating to sexual exploitation.
