GST impact on sex workers

Kolkata, July 10: The impact of GST has affected prostitutes. Asia's largest red light area in Kolkata Sonagachi has been hit hard because of the imposition of 12 per cent GST on sanitary napkins.

The workers have said that they will boycott the usage of the pads because they have become costly. They have said the government is being partial by fixing contraceptive pills and condoms at zero rates.

Women organization have said that we have trained this person to use hygienic ways so that the health of these people is not affected.Earlier very few were using these but currently the usage of napkins has gone up 85 % because of the subsidy was given.

Currently, many traders not supplying the subsidized pads because the raw material cost has gone up. Finally, they demanded the government roll back the tax imposed.
