Road development to block Maoists

New Delhi, June 27: The central government is planning a new initiative. The union government has initiated steps to expand road connectivity to 44 Naxal-hit districts in the country.

The total estimated cost of the project is Rs 11,725 crore. Officials said that Rs 550 crore would be spent for the security forces who will be deployed at strategic locations. Officials say that the project would include construction or upgrading of 5,411 kilometers of roads and 126 bridges in the Maoist-affected areas.

Sources say that the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the centrally-sponsored "Road Connectivity Project for Left Wing Extremism Affected Area" scheme is in final stages and the central government would release the funds for construction once DPR is ready.

Experts feel that the scheme launched by the central government would help the following Maoist-affected states such as Chattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. Currently, there is no road connectivity to these areas because they are located in deep forests.

Earlier in April the road construction in Sukuma district in Chattisgarh was halted when Maoists have killed CRPF jawans .sources say that Maoists wants to stop the development of the roads because they feel that once road connectivity improves development takes place and their existence would be in trouble.

Finally, the government hopes that the new developmental agenda it has launched such as improving road connectivity would help people, but many experts are cautioning that preventive steps must be taken to protect soldiers lives.
