Navy officials celebrated World Hydrograph day

Vishakapatnam, June 23: The Navy officials have celebrated the World Hydrograph day here on Wednesday.A visit by students of Navy Children School was organized onboard INS Darshak to give an insight of hydrographic operations on the occasion.

The World Hydrography Day was observed by the Eastern Naval Command here on Wednesday.

The Day is commemorated by the Survey ships and units of the Eastern Naval Command in order to promote hydrography and increase awareness of the hydrographic work being undertaken by the Indian Navy.

World Hydrography Day (WHD) is observed each year on June 21 with an aim to increase awareness about benign activities of hydrographers to assist mariners at all levels and for increasing the coverage of hydrographic information on a global level.

This year the theme for WHD is 'Mapping our Seas, Oceans and Waterways – More Important than Ever'.

Over the years, Indian Naval Hydrographic Department responsible for hydrographic surveying in India has showcased national commitment in ensuring safe navigation, resolving maritime boundaries with neighboring countries.

As part of its international responsibilities has provided coverage for marine safety information in the Navy area VIII region comprising of the Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal.

The Hydrographic survey ships of ENC have been extensively involved in the conduct of surveys not only along the Eastern coast of India but also in friendly foreign waters as part of International Hydrographic cooperation with littoral nations resulting in capacity building in the Indian Ocean Region.

INS Darshak has recently undertaken a hydrographic survey of Tanzania, Mauritius, and Sri Lanka as part of foreign cooperation initiatives.
