Sea Cucumbers seized ,one person arrested

Rameswaram, India June 19: A seizure has taken place today.Marine police have seized nearly 600 kg of sea cucumber and arrested one person while he tried to smuggle the items to Sri Lanka.

Sources say that these are an endangered coral reef species. Police said that they have acted according to a tip-off received and they have recovered the sea cucumber hidden in a sack buried off Thiruvadanai coast in Tamil Nadu and confiscated it. They have also said that the criminal was identified as Mohammed Wasim of Devipattinam.

Sea cucumbers have been classified as endangered species and their harvest is banned under the Wildlife Protection Act. Experts say that these species play a vital role in maintaining the sea ecological system. Police have registered a case and investigation is going on.
