Delhi Elections : Five of BJP Muslim candidates lost deposits

New Delhi April 27: Despite the Bharatiya Janata Party's sweeping victory in the Delhi municipal polls, all five of its Muslim candidates lost deposits in their respective wards.

The BJP had initially fielded six candidates from the community for the civic polls but the nomination of one was canceled by the State Election Commission.

The Muslim candidates of Delhi BJP were Kuwar Rafi from Zakir Nagar, Sartaj Ahmed from Chauhan Banger, Sabra Malik from Mustafabad, Famudin Safi from Delhi Gate and Rubina Begum from Quresh Nagar.

A Delhi BJP leader said, "If members of a particular community are not voting for us today it simply means they are distancing themselves from the national agenda of development and drifting from mainstream politics. They are creating a deadlock for themselves since the entire country's mandate is clear. This voting pattern will just keep them from the development that could have been theirs."

A total of 14 Muslim candidates won across all three municipal corporations.
