Unhygienic meat in restaurants

Hyderabad April 04: On Monday The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials has made sudden inspection on hotels and restaurants in the city.

The crackdown, which comes in the wake of the municipal corporation’s recent instructions to hotel managements and meat shops to procure only stamped meat from GHMC slaughter houses, saw the civic body levying fines on several restaurants on Monday.

While the Astoria Restaurant at RTC Crossroads was asked to pay a fine of Rs.20,000, the Sohail Restaurant at Nalgonda Crossroads was slapped with a penalty of Rs.40,000.

The instructions to such establishments were issued in late March, pointing out that GHMC slaughter houses would ensure quality meat to consumers in addition to curbing unhygienic conditions. Officials said that despite sufficient and quality meat being available from its slaughter houses, most hotels and shopkeepers were buying meat from private butchers, violating the rules.

The GHMC has slaughter houses in Amberpet, Chengicherla, Ramnasthpura, New Bhoiguda and Gowlipura, and charges Rs.25 for slaughtering a sheep or goat (domestic) and Rs.100 for slaughtering a buffalo or cattle.

GHMC is also constructing a modern slaughter house at Jiyaguda.
